NotesTop
Joseph may have been married to an Elizabeth (possibly Elizabeth Shipway, IGI Batch# M020231, 02 Mar 1835, Overton). From the census records 1851-1881 it seems likely that he was never actually married to Mary Ann Hillier, especially since there is a dearth of possible marriage records for them. This would also expalin why the children are all surnamed Hillier on the 1861 census and why his son Thomas' name is given as Thomas Dunn Hillier on his marriage certificate.

On the 1851 census the family have two lodgers: Mary Avenell, age 23, unmarried, seamstress and Henry Avenell age 3 described as a "visitor". Living next door are William and Elizabeth Avenell. The local registrar was Thomas Avennell, who must be related in some way to these people.

Death registered in the district of Highworth, sub-district Swindon, by his daughter Sarah Jane Hunt (present at the death), on 17th March 1886. Registrar: E.F. Avenell.
Cause of death given as Bronchitis, exhausion, heart disease. certified by M.A. Mclivan MRCS.
